The following article describes the reaction to recent events involving a fatal shooting in Baldwin Borough. The reaction of borough council is to further restrict community living, impose new requirements and regulations, and effectively abridge the rights of people to live in and be supported in their local communities. There are very real issues and challenges that we all face in protecting everyone touched by any type of community service system. However, our advocacy should begin with education and dialogue, and we should not ignore efforts to restrict and create greater burdens on service providers that will likely have no impact on preventing these tragic situations. When rights are at stake, silence is never golden.
